Abstract: The spontaneous nodulation and economicity of fertilization in dry beans grown after the cycle of the tomato crop in the Médio Paraíba-Fluminense region was objective of the study. The project was divided in three parts. On the first part 15 farmers interviews of 11 small villages in the municipality of Paty do Alferes, Paraíba do Sul and Petrópolis of Rio de Janeiro State. On the second part, was conducted one experiment in an oxisol of Mr. Antônio Alfredo Costa farm in Paraíba do Sul. On the third part, expense, income and retorn rates of dry bean crop of one hectare area were elaborate for the convencional crop which are executed following the complete operations for traditional monoculture of dry bean (crop 1); adding fertilizer at planting, when the dry bean in succession after tomato crop and cover fertilization carried out with NPK (crop 2); cropping dry bean in succession of tomato crop without fertilization (crop 3). The study showed that the farmers of the region present low scholarity, advanced age and tradition with the bean crop of more than 10 years. The Teresópolis and Macarrão cultivars are used frequently. Dry bean is croped in different period of the year, not having a defined crop season. From 14 farmers that were cropping, 85,7% conducted the crop system in a convencional way, executing all the xxiii traditional stages of the cropping sequency. The farmers have been using incorrects (amount and dose) fertilization, substituting the phosphate fertilizer of the seeding time by the cover period. Average contents of the N, P2O5 and K2O were respectively: 165, 217 and 200 kg/ha for the dry bean as a sole crop; 286, 483 and 346 kg/ha to tomato culture (previous crop); and 266, 253 and 306 kg/ha to the dry bean cropped after tomato. During the visits to the interview farms it was observed high possibility of the nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in the dry bean planted after tomato culture cycle, because 79% farmers do liming the soil when tomato is planted and only 7% of the farmers do it when dry bean is as a sole crop. The soil liming and high levels of phophorus and potassium used for th tomato crop and excessive watering has allawed nodulation in some sitos for the dry bean in succession. When the nodules were showed to the farmers and questioned about BNF, 21% of them answered that have never seen nodules; 79% had seen them but did not know about BNF and have never heared about them. Residual nitrogen contents of the soil of the tomato crop limited dry bean nodulation. A 100kg of N/ha influenced negativily nodulation and nodules dry weight and 60 kg of N/ha with urea decreased only the dry nodule weight. Total nodules active or inactive counted from 30 DAE in all treatments, 49% were active. There was not statistical xxiv diference with fertilizer treatments of freshpod yield of 20,43 t/ha (NPK) and 16,54 t/ha (without fertilization). Response to N fertilization was obtained only in the early harvest period. Until the 75th day after emergency (DAR) the crop 2 increased production in comparison with the crop 3 in the period from May 21 to June 04, 1994 and coincide with the beginning of dry bean harvest time. For that reason, the farmer get the best market prices of this point. The average price obtained in the crop 2 was US 7,90/box and for crop 3 was US 7,19/box. Total expenses for crop 3 was US 367,30/ha less than crop 2, including savings in fertilizer, harvest, classification, packaging and all transport. The participation of fertilizer and the fertilization in the total expenses of the crop 1 was 21,21% and crop 2, 8,26%. Comparative study of the net income and returns rates in the crops 2 and 3 showed that unitary net income and return rate can better explain the factors of the economic profit of the production, because, although the total net income was larger in the crop 2 (U$ 7.142,65), the unitaries nets receipts (U$ 5,36) and the returns rates (U$ 2,46/U$) were larger for crop 3 (total net income U$ 6.081,40, unitaries nets receipts US 5,39 and the returns rates U$ 2,51/U$). The returns rates variation study of each harvest and the total harvest during the comercialization ages was confirmed that the market favoured crop 2, but was insuficient to exceed xxv the return rate of the total production of the crop 3 and indicated economic viability of using BNF in dry bean in succession to tomato in the Médio Paraíba-Fluminense region.
