Abstract: Geomorphology is one of the main factors that build the conditions of natural landscapes. The shape of the terrain influences the water movement and soil attributes distribution, forming distinct habitats along different sections of landforms, thus the occurrence of distinct plant communities on different geomorphic surfaces is a consequence of these processes. In the context of the Atlantic Forest fragmentation, the knowledge of environmental peculiarities on hillslope areas and preferred habitats of species that facilitate the recovery of forest ecosystems make an important set of information to plan and optimize projects involving ecological reforestation. The present study aimed to evaluate the soil attributes, identify patterns in the tree community and select potential species for use in recovery of degraded or disturbed areas in two different landforms, concave and convex. The study was carried out in a fragment of Seasonal Semideciduous Submontane forest in advanced secondary stage of regeneration in the city of Pinheiral, state of Rio de Janeiro. Two adjacent landforms were selected, a concave and a convex one, within the fragment. Six transepts were traced, three in each landform, 120 m long and covering the lower, medium and upper thirds of the hillslope. Along the transepts were collected soil samples at two depths (0-10 and 10-20 cm) for physical and fertility analysis and were identified and measured all the tree individuals with circumference at breast height (CBH) of 15 cm or more, distant up to 2 m from the transept lines. The soil variables obtained had their data grouped by landform categories and then subjected to the Shapiro-Wilk’s test for normality and Levene’s test for homogeneity of variance. Parametric and non-parametric variables were subjected to Student’s T test and Mann-Whitney’s U test, respectively. Those with significant statistical differences were subjected to a preliminary Principal Components Analysis (PCA), which assisted the elimination of other variables considered less explanatory of the sample universe. A new PCA was carried out then with the remaining soil variables only, generating an ordination diagram. With these variables along with the plant quantitative variables was carried out a Redundancy Analysis (RDA) and with the abundances of 12 species considered the most representative in the overall survey was carried out a Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). The concave landform presented more variability in the spatial distribution of the soil attributes, with the lower third of the hillslope within it being the most eutrophic site. The convex landform presented a higher number of botanical families, whereas the concave form had higher density of individuals, species richness, dominant CBH and height. The species Cupania oblongifolia, Dalbergia nigra, Piptadenia gonoacantha, Jacaranda micranta, Astronium graveolens and Pseudopiptadenia contorta were considered generalists in matter of habitat election, considering the two studied landforms. These may be indicated as potential species for use in programs of recovery of degraded and disturbed areas on hillslopes. The concave landform was considered a more heterogeneous feature and with higher availability of habitats, whereas the convex landform was considered a more restrictive environment to the establishment of forest species, relatively.
