Myrtaceae is among the 10 Brazilian angiosperm families with the highest species richness and is the fifth most threatened, being the Atlantic Forest Domain its center of diversity with 712 species, with emphasis on the State of Rio de Janeiro that is the federative unit with the highest species richness for the family (331). In the Atlantic Forest, the Myrtaceae perform an important role in the ecosystem structure because its fleshy fruits work as food sources for frugivorous vertebrates throughout the year and in seasons of resource scarcity. However, the super exploration of natural resources, expansion of cities, replacement of forests by agricultural areas and the industrial development have increasingly destroyed natural ecosystems, such as the Atlantic Forest that currently holds about 70% of the Brazilian population and has already lost more than 85% of its original cover. Rio de Janeiro, despite being the most populous municipality in the State of Rio de Janeiro still holds three important remnants of Dense Ombrophilous Forest (Pedra Branca, Tijuca and Gericinó-Mendanha Massifs), as well as areas of restinga, mangroves, salt fields and swamps (Jacarepaguá lowlands, Marambaia, Guaratiba and Grumari). Studies using the occurrence of endemic and endangered species of Myrtaceae have shown that the family can be used as “model taxon” to indicate conservation priority areas for the conservation of the Atlantic Forest, thus being a tool to assist in the conservation of plant diversity. This work aims to elaborate a checklist of the species of Myrtaceae and generate a mapping of the occurrence of the species in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. To this end, the collection of the REFLORA Virtual Herbarium and the Virtual Herbarium of Flora and Fungi – INCT was consulted, where the records of Myrtaceae specimens collected in the municipality had been surveyed. Analyses of collection-effort, geographical distribution and conservation status of the species were made. As a result of the research, 1.878 records corresponding to 247 species were collected and two maps were generated, one of collection-effort and another of species richness. Regarding the distribution, 152 species distributed in the remnant vegetation areas were identified, corresponding to 46% of the total indicated to the State. Based on the ix results, it was possible to conclude that there is a lack of knowledge about the geographic distribution of Myrtaceae, especially in the remnants of vegetation in the city of Rio de Janeiro, demonstrating the importance of increasing the collection-effort in these regions to improve knowledge about the flora of the municipality, and thus collaborate with conservation actions.pt_BR
