Abstract: The mapping of the land cover and use of a given area is an important instrument for environmental and territorial planning purposes, which together with altimetry and slope information allows understanding how the land is used along its scenarios in the landscape. The objective of this study was to understand the present ways of land cover and use in the proposed Buffer Zone (BZ) for the State Park off Pedra Selada (SPPS), in order to support planning and decision making, ensuring the continuum of Environmental functions provided by the conservation unit (UC). Remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques were used with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 software. The classification process was carried out in a supervised way, using the Maximum Likelihood (Max Like) algorithm, using images from the RapidEye satellite, with 5 m of spatial resolution, of the year 2013. In order to continue the study of the different territory usages in the Buffer Zone was generated, from the legal limits of the UC, a buffer with radius of 3 km. The following classes were identified: Urbanized Area, Pasture, Forest, Secondary Vegetation, Rocky Outcrops and Cloud. The results showed that in the BZ the predominant class was "Forest", with 12,336 ha, equivalent to 36.9% of the area. The second most representative class was "Pasture", with 11,476 ha, representing 34.3% of the BZ. The "Secondary Vegetation" corresponded to the third largest class, with 6,965 ha, approximately 21% of the BZ. To a lesser extent, the "Urbanized Area" class presented 2,034 ha, 6.1% of the BZ and the "Rocky Outcrops" class, presented 559 ha, representing 1.7% of the BZ area. The use of digital image processing techniques through remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GISs), as well as the use of the Max Like classifier, were proven effective in mapping and quantifying land cover and use classes, resulting in high accuracy. The GISs environment, joined with geoprocessing techniques, enabled the analysis of the territorial usages in the SPPS Buffer Zone. It was verified that the BZ suffers expressive influence of the human activities developed in the region. Milk farming, mass tourism, industrialization and increasing urbanization in the region are issues that should receive special attention from the management of the unit, seeking suitable strategies and alternatives that integrate the local people and guarantee the protection of primary forest areas, as well as those in regeneration, indispensable for the effective functioning of the BZ and the fulfillment of conservation objectives of the UC.
